Take the First Step

[NOTE: This devotional was written by guest writer, Will Addison.]

Verse of the day:

But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, “Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.” And Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus. – Matthew 14:27-29 (ESV)

Introduction

Have you ever felt like God is showing you the way to growth, but taking that first step is scary? It could be that you are struggling with something you know you should not be doing. It could be that you know of something you should be doing. Whatever it is, that first step to growth can be so hard to make.

Truth from Scripture

From our reading, we see that Jesus encourages Peter to not be afraid. In a battered boat with winds and water raging around them, Peter steps out and walks on water toward Jesus. He took that first step. We know that Peter also falls into the water, but who is there to pick him up when he is falling? The same Lord and Savior that died for you.

Why This Matters for You

Change is hard. We get used to things being a certain way or acting a certain way. It becomes our routine, and we are used to it, but God requires us to change. If we have sin in our lives, we must take that first step to change it. Our souls depend on it.

Encouragement for Today

When that first step is in front of us, we often don’t take it because we are afraid of failure. It is human nature to be afraid of failure, but if we are pursuing Jesus, just as Peter was, we have an outreached hand waiting to pick us up when we fall. Also, who knows? Maybe that first step is the beginning of growth that never stops.

Challenge of the Week

Take the first step. Do it!

Closing Thought

Making a change while pursuing a righteous relationship with God is a worthy endeavor. It is something we can all benefit from doing. Make a change. Be proud of yourself and love yourself.
