How Do I Know God Is Real?

Verse of the Day:

“For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.”

— Romans 1:20

The Question

If we can’t see God, how can we know He’s real?

That is one of the most honest and important questions anyone can ask. In a world where people say, “Believe only what you see,” it can be hard to trust in an invisible God. Some might wonder, “Do I just believe because my parents do?” or “Do I just believe because it is what I’ve always been told?”

Those are good questions, and they are questions that we all need to answer. The great thing is, God isn’t afraid of these questions. In all reality, He invites you to look for Him.

The Struggle

Faith doesn’t mean closing your eyes and wishing really hard that God exists. Faith is trust built on evidence. And God gives plenty of it. The problem is that we too often look for Him in the wrong places or we expect Him to prove Himself on our own terms.

God doesn’t show up with flashing lights or a loud voice from the sky. Instead, He reveals Himself in ways that require us to seek, to think, and to respond.

The Truth

The Bible shows us that there are many ways that we can know God is real. These show up not just by feeling, but by evidence, reason, and experience.

  1. Creation points to a Creator.

The order and beauty of the universe aren’t accidents. Psalm 19:1 says, “The heavens declare the glory of God.” The stars, mountains, oceans, and even the design of your own body all testify that there’s a Designer behind it all.

2. Conscience points to a Lawgiver.

Deep down, we all know right from wrong. Where did that come from? It’s not just a survival instinct. It is God’s moral law written on our hearts. Romans 2:14-15 says, “For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires, they are a law to themselves, even though they do not have the law. They show that the work of the law is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness, and their conflicting thoughts accuse or even excuse them.” Our sense of justice and goodness points back to the One who defines them.

3. Scripture points to the Savior.

The Bible isn’t just an old religious book. It’s filled with fulfilled prophecies, historical accuracy, and a unified message written over 1,500 years by 40 different authors. (More on this next week…) All of this points directly to Jesus. This is not a coincidence. It is divine design.

4. Changed lives point to His power.

Look at how people are transformed when they encounter Jesus. From Saul the persecutor turning into Paul the preacher, to people today leaving addiction, fear, and shame behind. Something (OR SOMEONE) real is changing these hearts.

5. Your own experience points to His presence.

When you pray, worship, or open Scripture, you feel conviction, peace, or comfort. That is not just emotion. That’s the Spirit of God drawing near (James 4:8).

The Response

God has given us all we need to know that He is real. He also calls us to respond. Hebrews 11:6 says, “Whoever would draw near to God must believe that He exists and that He rewards those who seek Him.”

Faith begins when you decide to seek Him honestly. When you look at creation, your conscience, and the cross, you realize that this didn’t happen by accident.

God doesn’t hide from those who truly want to find Him. Jeremiah 29:13 promises, “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.”

Reflection Questions

  1. What are some things in creation that make you believe that there is a Creator?
  2. How has God shown Himself to be real in your own life or those lives around you?
  3. What is one step that you can take this week to seek God with all your heart?

Prayer

Lord, thank You for revealing Yourself in creation. Thank You for revealing Yourself in Scripture. Thank you for revealing Yourself through Jesus. Help me to open my eyes to see You at work around me. Please strengthen my faith when I doubt and help me seek You with all my heart. Amen.
