How Do I Know What God Wants Me to Do with My Life?

Verse of the Day:

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.

-Proverbs 3:5-6 (ESV)

Introduction

“What am I supposed to do with my life?”

It is one of the biggest questions you’ll ever ask. It is also one that doesn’t go away overnight. You might wonder what school to attend. You might wonder what career to pursue. You might wonder who to date or maybe you are just wondering how to make decisions that are actually pleasing to God.

You want the good news? God doesn’t hide His will from us. He wants you to know His purpose for your life, but at the same time, He is more interested in who you are becoming more than simply what you are doing.

Key Passage

The verse of the day gives us some insight into this. When we stop trying to figure everything out on our own and start trusting God fully, He promises to guide our steps. Wouldn’t that be a great feeling to have your steps guided by your Creator? The path may not always look straight to us, but it’s perfectly directed by Him.

Digging Deeper

  1. God’s will is first about WHO you are.

Many people think of God’s will like a coded map they have to decipher. Scripture focuses on becoming the kind of person God wants you to be. The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 4:3, “For this is the will of God, your sanctification:”. Before you ever worry about your career or your next big decision, God wants your heart to be fully His. He wants it to be holy, honest, and humble.

If you’re walking with Him daily, you’re already in the center of His will.

2. God guides through His Word.

You’ll never know God’s will apart from God’s Word. It simply isn’t possible. The Bible isn’t a list of random rules. It’s a lamp to your feet (Psalm 119:105).

If you want to know God’s direction, start with what He has already revealed:

  • Love Him and others (Matthew 22:37-39)
  • Flee from sin (2 Timothy 2:22)
  • Be thankful and joyful (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

When you obey the clear things, the unclear things begin to make more sense.

3. God uses His Spirit to guide your heart.

After Jesus left this earth, He sent the Holy Spirit to guide believers into truth (John 16:13). The Spirit helps us recognize God’s voice through Scripture. If you are walking closely with God, He will shape your desires to align with His will (Psalm 37:4).

So sometimes knowing what God wants doesn’t come through a lightning bolt moment. It comes through a growing sense of peace as you stay close to Him.

4. God works through wise counsel and open doors.

God often guides us through other believers, mentors, parents, or church leaders who walk closely with Him (Proverbs 11:14).

He also opens and closes opportunities for a reason. When things don’t go your way, it doesn’t mean that God forgot you. It might mean that He’s redirecting you toward something better.

Faith in Action

If you want to discover God’s will for your life:

  • Pray daily. Ask for wisdom (James 1:5) and be willing to follow wherever He leads.
  • Stay in His Word. God speaks most clearly through Scripture.
  • Seek Godly advice. Surround yourself with people who point you toward Jesus.
  • Take the next right step. You don’t have to see the whole path. You just have to trust God with the next step.

Closing

God’s will isn’t a secret code for you to crack. It’s a relationship to walk in. When you focus on knowing God, He’ll take care of showing you where to go.

Think of it like this: a GPS only gives you the next turn, not the entire route at once. God does the same. He leads one step at a time, because He wants you to trust Him more than the map.

Your future isn’t uncertain when your faith is in the One who already holds it.

Challenge for the Week

This week, take time to pray about your future. Focus less on WHAT you should do and more on WHO God wants you to become. Write down one area of your life where you can grow closer to Him right now.
