There are many ways to talk about love, but Jesus defines love through sacrifice.
In John 10, Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd. Unlike hired hands who abandon the sheep when danger comes, Jesus stays. He does more than protect. He gives Himself.
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.”
-John 10:11
These words are not poetic exaggeration. They are a promise. Jesus knows exactly where His path leads, and He walks it willingly. He does not stumble into the cross. He chooses it.
Jesus makes this unmistakably clear:
“No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.”
-John 10:18
The cross is not a loss of control. It is an act of love.
At Calvary, Jesus endures betrayal, mockery, suffering, and death. He absorbs the weights of sin so that we might receive forgiveness. The One who healed others allows His own body to be broken. The One with authority over life and death submits to death so that we might live.
Paul captures the depth of this love when he writes:
“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”
-Romans 5:8
Jesus does not wait for us to improve ourselves. He does not give His life for the deserving. He lays it down for the lost, the broken, and the undeserving.
The cross reveals who Jesus truly is.
He is not merely a teacher with inspiring words. He is not only a healer with compassionate hands. He is a Savior who gives everything.
This kind of love calls for a response. To follow Jesus means trusting not just in His example, but in His sacrifice. It means laying down our own attempts to save ourselves and receiving the grace He offers.
Jesus’ love goes all the way. It goes all the way to the cross. It goes all the way to the grave. It goes all the way beyond.
Because He gave His life, we are invited to truly live.
Reflection Questions:
- How does the cross shape my understanding of Jesus’ love?
- Do I live as someone who has been redeemed by sacrifice?
- What does it mean for me to respond to Jesus’ love with surrender?
Prayer
Dear God,
Thank You for sending Your Son to lay down His life for me. Help me to never take the cross lightly. Teach me to live in gratitude, faith, and obedience as one who has been redeemed by Your love.
Amen
