Abiding in Jesus: Staying Connected

Introduction

Have you ever tried really hard to do the right thing, but still felt like you were failing? Do you want to be more patient, avoid sin, and/or stay consistent spiritually, but it just doesn’t seem to last?

Why?

Following Jesus was never meant to be simply about trying harder. It’s about staying connected.

John 15:4-5

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

This is one of the most important truths for anyone that is trying to follow Jesus.

“Apart from me you can do nothing.”

Not “a little.”

Not “less.”

Nothing!

What Does It Mean to “Abide”?

The word abide means to remain, to stay, to continue.

Jesus is telling us to stay connected to Him. Not just occasionally. Not just when you need help. Constantly.

A Branch and a Vine

Jesus gives us a simple picture. He is the vine. We are the branches. A branch only lives and produces fruit if it stays connected to the vine. If it disconnects from the vine, it dries up, it weakens, it dies.

The Problem

A lot of people try to follow Jesus like this:

  • They show up to church.
  • They try to make better choices.
  • They rely on their own effort.

What they are missing is actually trying to stay connected to Jesus daily.

So what happens next? Growth is inconsistent. Temptation feels overwhelming. Their faith feels dry.

They are trying to produce fruit without being connected to the vine!

So How Do We “Abide”?

Abiding doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does have to be intentional. It could look like this:

  1. Spend time in God’s Word

Not just reading it, but actually listening to it. Let God’s truth shape your thinking.
  2. Pray

This doesn’t have to be formal. It doesn’t have to sound perfectly. Just have real, consistent conversation with God.
  3. Keep Jesus in your mind throughout your day.

Remember Him. Think about Him when making decisions. Talk to Him as life is happening.

Abiding is less about moments and more about creating a different mindset.

We often think that if we try harder, we’ll do better. Jesus tells us here that if we just stay connected to Him, we’ll bear fruit.

That changes the mindset. You don’t start with your behavior. You start with your relationship with God. You don’t begin with your own effort. You begin by becoming connected to God.

What Happens When You Abide?

Jesus says, “He it is that bears much fruit.” That fruit includes love, joy, peace, patience, etc. It may not all happen instantly, but over time those fruits will be easier to see living in you.

Growth becomes natural when connection is consistent.

What Happens When You Don’t?

Jesus is also clear here when he says, “Apart from me you can do nothing.” Without connection, you burn out. Your efforts fade. You fall into sin more easily. You lose direction.

It’s not a motivation problem. It’s a connection problem.

Recap

Week 1: Walk with Jesus daily.

Week 2: Deny yourself and follow Him.

Week 3: Stay connected so that you actually can.

Here’s the truth. You cannot follow Jesus consistently if you’re not connected to Him daily.

Following Jesus isn’t about pushing harder. It’s about staying closer to Him. The closer you stay to Him, the more your life begins to change.
