Talking with God: Building a Prayer Life

Introduction

If you had a close friend, but never talked to them, would that relationship grow?

Of course not. Relationships require communication, and the same is true with God.

A lot of people believe in God, go to church, and read their Bible at times, yet struggle with prayer.

Why?

Because prayer can feel awkward or repetitive or selfish. Yet, at its core, prayer is much simpler than we often make it.

Prayer is simply talking with God.

Key Passage #1 – Jesus Teaches Us to Pray

Matthew 6:9-13

Pray then like this: “Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”

Jesus didn’t just tell us to pray. He showed us how. This isn’t about repeating exact words every time. It’s a pattern that teaches us what prayer should include.

Here is a simple patter for prayer using Jesus’ example:

  1. Start with God

    “Our Father in heaven…”

Remember who you are talking to. God is powerful, but also personal. Prayer begins with relationship, not requests.
  2. Focus on His Will

“Your kingdom come, Your will be done…”

Prayer is not about getting your way. It’s about aligning your heart with God’s will.
  3. Bring Your Needs

“Give us this day our daily bread…”

God cares about your daily life. Nothing is too small or too big.
  4. Confess and Be Honest

    “Forgive us our debts…”

Admit your sins. Be real. God already knows. You can’t hide it from Him.
  5. Ask for Help

    “Lead us not into temptation…”

Ask for strength. Ask for guidance.

Key Passage #2 – The Result of Prayer

Philippians 4:6-7

do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

This passage gives us a promise. Prayer doesn’t just change situations. It changes YOU. Anxiety is replaced with peace. Fear is replaced with trust. Chaos is replaced with stability.

The problem is usually inconsistent prayer. Most people don’t reject prayer. They neglect it. We pray when things go wrong. We forget when things go well. We intend to pray, but we don’t follow through. So our connection with God becomes occasional instead of consistent.

Prayer isn’t about being perfect. A lot of people avoid prayer because they think they may not know what to say. Or they think they aren’t good at it. Prayer isn’t a performance. God isn’t looking for impressive words. He wants honest hearts.

What Does a Daily Prayer Life Look Like?

It doesn’t have to be long or complicated. Start with something like this:

  • Morning: A short prayer to start your day.
  • During the day: Quick prayers (in your thoughts).
  • Night: Reflect and talk to God again.

Think less like a speech and more like an ongoing conversation.

When you build this habit (over time), you become more aware of God’s presence in your life. You turn to Him more naturally. Your trust in Him grows. Your peace increases.

Not instantly, but steadily.

Closing Thought

You don’t need perfect words to talk to God. You just need a willing heart. The more you talk to Him, the closer you’ll walk with Him.
